I've been fascinated with the films of Andy Milligan for years, although I can't say I've enjoyed them very much. His movies are cheap, crass, mean-spirited and ugly, but for better or worse the guy was a true artist who expressed his worldview through the lens, as this excellent biography attests.

Surgikill is one I've yet to see, but I think this brief collection of clips satisfies my curiosity satisfactorily. May I suggest tracking down The Man With Two Heads, The Ghastly Ones, The Body Beneath, Seeds, Bloodthirsty Butchers, Carnage, The Rats Are Coming! The Werewolves Are Here! or his cutting edge (for 1965) experimental short subject Vapors? No? I don't blame you. He was a fascinating character, though ...

Absolutely sick but rare 1981 slasher, I saw it once years and years ago and have been looking for it ever since. Seriously, you probably don't wanna watch this ... I'm not trying to be smug or anything, it's just pretty harsh. The film's British distributor actually went to jail for releasing an uncut version to theaters during the early 80s "video nasty" censorship debacle. Check out part 9 if you want a taste.

At one point my old lady Lori and I lived in different cities, she in Lansing and me in Chicago ... we had a romantic rendezvous in Niles, Michigan, which was approximately halfway between for both of us, and while browsing in a few antique stores, I found a cheap VHS copy of this film, which I treasure to this day. Also found a Pabst Blue Ribbon sign featuring Rosie Grier as shill which decorates our current bathroom window. A very special day indeed.

Some bands are retarded, some bands are calculating ... make no mistake, Blackie Lawless is a businessman in the Gene Simmons tradition, but I have to admit to falling for the W.A.S.P. schtick hard back in 1984 after buying the 12" import single of this then-daringly titled song. I plead inexperience with huckster culture. I saw them open for KISS (post-makeup) at the Lansing Civic Center in 1985 and it was an important night for me. After smoking a joint with my pal Ken Kain, I saw the whole heavy metal experience through new eyes ... at one point ol' Blackie turned around and I realized not only did he have the cheeks cut out of his leather pants, but that he was probably as old as my high school teachers as well. This struck me as so hilarious that I couldn't stop laughing for the remainder of their set, and as a result I ended up enjoying the show far more than I would have as the true metal believer I was when I walked in the room. I've had a different attitude toward rock and roll in general ever since ... as important and life affirming as pop music might be, never forget that it's all a big fuckin' joke. If you can manage that, you'll have a lot more fun and be less of a tool.

Later that night, Kiss sucked all the pleasure out of the room with their empty, airless "rawk," and a guy tried to punch me in the face because he thought I was trying to bang his girlfriend. Dude, she was perched on my shoulders so she could see the stage, I swear, that's all!

Public access TV version of the long-running Flint MI public radio program Take No Prisoners, which brought no-hold-barred punk, hardcore, garage and assorted noise to my local airwaves when I was a square-ass teen in the early 80s. Hosted by my hero, Flint luminary Ben Hamper, enabled here by my old pal Jerry Humphries, this 1991 episode features Repulsion, a Flintoid band that figures heavily in the history of death metal ... if you can handle that sort of thing, they're pretty amazing.

While we're on the subject, check out the Rivethead some time.

Something gets lost in translation when idiosyncratically Mexican films are dubbed for audiences north of the border, and the resulting cultural slugfests are bizarre by any measure. Doctor of Doom comes courtesy the late, great K. Gordon Murray, an American producer and distributor who reworked and rereleased scores of Mexican features for drive-ins and Saturday afternoon matinees. Originally known as Las Luchadoras Contra El Medico Asesino, this enjoyably goofy lady wrestler melodrama pits two lovely pugilists against a "Mad Doctor" (as he's known in the press) who performs experimental brain operations involving "women of low IQs" and gorillas. Doctor of Doom is composed like a mini-serial: Every 20 minutes or so, a confrontation between the police and the evil scientist concludes with a narrow escape or a foiled capture. Wrestling fans will love the authentic ringside footage, of which there's a generous helping, but the rest of the film is cardboard cheap and a bastion of lunacy for lovers of weird cinema. The folks behind Doctor of Doom were veterans of the Mexican film industry. René Cardona was a journeyman director of low-budget Mexican genre films including a number of Santo titles, and screenwriter Alfredo Salazar was nearly as prolific at his trade. They brought most of the cast back the following year for a sequel, Las Luchadoras Contra la Momia, or as it was known stateside, Wrestling Women vs. the Aztec Mummy. FRED BELDIN

Another minor classic ... I was nine years old when The Incredible Melting Man hit theaters, and it was the source of much excited playground discussion. The idea of actually seeing a cannibalistic melting man was too thrilling, and the radio & television adverts played up the gross-out factor but good, so my friends and I speculated wildly about just how great this movie must be. It was at least another decade before I actually got to see the thing, and it didn't disappoint. It's absurd, grotesque and played with an utterly straight face, except when using severed heads and cigarette-smoking children as comic relief.

SATAN'S BLACK WEDDING

Mark Gray is a Hollywood actor who travels to Monterey to attend his sister's funeral. Nina Gray slashed her own wrists and left a suicide note, but both Mark and the police believe there must be more to the story, since the corpse was thoroughly drained of blood and is missing the ring finger of its left hand. What they don't know is that an evil 200-year-old priest has turned Nina into a vampire and is commanding her to murder each member of her family. Ultimately, he plans to bring Nina and Mark together in an unholy union to conceive a son for Lucifer.

Satan's Black Wedding is an amateurish, low-budget feature, but it overcomes its many deficiencies where it counts, providing eerie ambience and maximum gore. The acting ranges from bad to serviceable, and a romantic subplot is unconvincing, but when the vampires attack, the viewer is given genuine creeps and buckets of red paint. The film's wretched lighting becomes an asset in these harrowing sequences, and the fiends are drooling, animalistic creatures with oversized fangs and dead expressions. There are no seductive vampires in flowing gowns and smartly tailored tuxedos here, just soulless monsters tearing into their horrified victims. As a result, Satan's Black Wedding won't appeal to most vampire fans and certainly not to anyone expecting any level of professionalism (the film refuses to acknowledge the difference between night and day, and the sound is awful, with dreadful hissing audible in most scenes), but schlock cinema devotees seeking uneasy sensations will find this brief obscurity worth an hour of their time. This film is my favorite of Universal's early 1930s horror cycle ... Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, satanism, ailurophobia, war atrocities, incest and a climactic flaying, this one has it all and is surprisingly subtle at the same time (best depiction of a medical injection in cinema). Non-horror fans should watch it for the incredible art deco set designs. Contains no Poe references, despite the title. Maddening, engrossing, like a half-remembered nightmare. Directed by the great Edgar Ulmer.
